Lord Louis Mountbatten

Lord Louis Mountbatten was born on June 25, 1900 in London during the 63rd year of the reign of his great grandmother, Queen Victoria.  He was christened “Louis Francis Albert Victor Nicholas” and was nick-named “Dickie”. He was educated during the first ten years of his life by his mother, also named Victoria, a remarkable woman of intelligence who studied deeply in archeology, politics, psychology and the technological advances of the day. Her son learned to enjoy working with enthusiasm and accuracy and was not unafraid to discuss whatever subject came up in conversation.

He attended the Royal Navy’s College at Dartmouth and achieved the rank of commander during WWII. In 1943, he became head of the South-East Asia Command in WWII and helped the Americans to liberate Japan. As a result of his reputation for integrity, he became the Viceroy of India in 1947 during which he oversaw the independence of India and Pakistan.

He married the beautiful, heiress Edwina Ashley on July 18, 1922. He had two daughters, one named Pamela, and the other Patricia.  At the time that I met him, (see Chapter 13 of “Surviving High Society”), I do not recall that he made any mention of that fact although my first name is “Patricia” and I was introduced to him, along with my Mother, by the name “Patty”.
